An Ever-Growing List of Zero Waste Shops with Eco-Friendly Essentials

May 25, 2020

Zero waste shops can be an invaluable resource when shifting to a low waste lifestyle — these eco-friendly stores curate a variety of plastic-free, reusable, and refillable essentials in one place, taking out much of the time and research that it would take to find each product separately.

However, with the increasing awareness and interest in sustainability, there has been quite a bit of greenwashing and a lot of cheap so-called “green” products flooding the market, such as unsustainably sourced bamboo utensils and cheaply made reusable coffee cups that are actually only usable a few times.

So where is the eco warrior to shop? Here’s your guide to zero waste shops that will help you fill your needs, sustainably!

Note that there are partners and affiliates in this guide. As always, I only partner with brands I believe in and meet strict standards. Thanks for your support!

1. EcoRoots

EcoRoots sustainable zero waste shop

EcoRoots is a plastic-free store dedicated to providing sustainable alternatives for everyday products — from hair care to dish cleaning products — in one aesthetically pleasing online shopping experience. The colorful platform is full of beautiful zero waste products, and each product page features transparent information about the ingredients along with clear instructions on how to use the product. In other words, EcoRoots has set out to make your low waste lifestyle journey both simple and fun!

2. Zero Waste Store

Zero Waste Store

Zero Waste Store is a huge mecca for all things eco-friendly and low waste from kitchen and cleaning products to shopping and travel to baby and kid essentials. Probably what I love most about Zero Waste Store though are their curated zero waste kits! Sometimes it just feels overwhelming amidst everything else going on in life to research a bunch of individual products when you’re trying to green your kitchen, self-care routine, or anything else. Zero Waste Store does all the work for you pre-selecting a bunch of relevant products in various categories. They have Starter Kits, Hair Care Kits, Menstrual Kits, Farmers Market Kits, Furry Friend Kits, and much more.

3. Refill Revolution

Refill Revolution - zero waste shops
Shea Butter and Cocoa Butter from Refill Revolution

Refill Revolution is an incredible resource for bulk home goods with everything from cleaning essentials to beauty products! (They even have an essential oil refill program.) This is the perfect resource for finding home and personal care products in bulk when you don’t have a bulk store near you or you prefer online shopping during the current situation. What’s awesome about Refill Revolution is that they even offer many of their bulk products in sustainable packaging — which is not as common as you’d think!

Not only does the zero waste shop provide bulk items, but they also have other low-waste goods like menstrual cups and natural deodorant. I discovered this shop a couple of weeks ago and I can’t wait to get some bulk products from them the next time I’m out of something!

12. Elate Cosmetics (Makeup)

Elate Beauty is your destination for all of your zero waste makeup needs! There isn’t a retailer that only sells low/zero waste beauty, but this is one brand where you can find many makeup products.

The clean beauty brand uses 100% cruelty-free, vegan ingredients and 75% of the ingredients in Elate’s products are also organic. While not completely zero waste, Elate uses 75% waste-free packaging — using materials like compostable bamboo and infinitely recyclable aluminum — and is actively working towards becoming completely waste-free.

Their products are also refillable. Once you’ve purchased the first product and you need to refill, simply go to the product page and select the option with the beauty product only. So, instead of choosing “3g Brow Balm + Bamboo Case” you’d choose “3g Only”.

The brand also has a “Perfectly Imperfect” program where they sell any slightly flawed products at a discount — rather than let them go to waste as most makeup brands do!

For truly ethical production, there must be an equal knowledge exchange between makers & designers in the design process, especially when artisans are using traditional techniques & generations-old crafts.

But what does collaborative design look like in practice? And how does this type of collaboration support more sustainable and ethical production?
