Sleep Soundly With Organic, Fair Trade Sheets from DOPLNOK

November 5, 2018
Share

I often write about the importance of, and my preference for, wearing natural and organic materials—they’re more comfortable, better for the environment, and healthier for our skin.

Considering that we spend nearly one third of our lives sleeping, though, I figured I should spend some time talking about organic, natural bedding as well! So, I want to share my experience with the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) cotton, Fair Trade certified sheets I have been sleeping on from DOPLNOK!

A bit of background on the brand: DOPLNOK is a socially-responsible, sustainable brand of bed and crib sheets that works directly with their manufacturers to ensure transparency and to reduce the costs of middlemen. The result? Consciously made, eco-friendly, and high-quality sheets for a great value.

DOPLNOK has three types of organic, 300 thread-count sheets to choose from: PRIME Percale Collection, a PEARL Sateen Collection and a PRECIOUS Baby Collection.

The PRIME Percale Collection is DOPLNOK’s organic cotton version of the classic, closely-woven percale weave—these sheets are crisp, lightweight, and breathable. Their PEARL Sateen Collection sheets are a sleek, silky option for those who prefer more luxurious sheets. And their PRECIOUS Baby Collection are crib sheets perfect for the little ones in your life.

The DOPLNOK team sent me their full-size PEARL sheets in champagne to test out! They arrived in a beautiful handmade box which you can see in the picture below. It could be used as a decorative storage for the sheets when you’re not using them, for magazines, books (what I’m planning to use the box for!), or other knick knacks. If you gift these sheets, the lovely box also makes for an extra special touch.

Sustainable Organic Fair Trade Sheets

The fabric of the sheets is 100% Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified cotton, the highest certification available for organic cotton. Following the strict restrictions of GOTS, DOPLNOK ensures there are no toxic dyes or chemicals used, and that minimal wastewater is produced. The fact that DOPLNOK goes the extra mile to obtain the top-tier certification for their sheets demonstrates their solid commitment to sustainability and providing a safe, healthy fabric for their customers.

And the proof is in the pudding—their attention to a superior natural fabric is definitely noticeable in the quality of the PRIME sheets. They feel significantly softer and more breathable than any other sheets I’ve used. I’m also happy to report that I washed the sheets right away after opening the box, and they held up perfectly. (I was relieved that the color and feel of the DOPLNOK sheets stayed the same after washing because was not the case with a set of organic sheets I purchased from a different brand.)

I will warn you though: after switching to organic, natural bedding you may just find that it’s a bit harder to get out of your bed in the morning!

Conscious sheets made from organic cotton

While I appreciate that the sheets are environmentally-conscious and are super comfy too, more than anything I love that I can sleep soundly knowing the people who were making these sheets were paid and treated fairly.

DOPLNOK goes beyond just saying the right words in marketing like “ethical” or “conscious” but has really walked the walk and sources only from Fair Trade Certified manufacturers. They have achieved certification through Fair Trade USA, a reputable third-party certifier that ensures employees are making living wages, have safe working conditions, and have access to education and healthcare.

Organic ethically-made sheets - sustainable bedding

DOPLNOK has really checked off all of my boxes: sustainable, high-quality (which is essential because of course a product is only truly sustainable if it lasts!), ethically and beautifully made, and comfortable. Yes, I know that’s a lot of boxes!

The sheets come in four colors: Champagne, which is pictured here (I would describe it as a buttery yellow beige), Marshmallow White, Sweet Mint (like a light bluish-green) and Moon Gray (a dark charcoal). The PEARL and PRIME sheets come in a Full, Queen, King, and California King sizes.

📧 Dear @hm, nothing about your clothes is conscious if they're made by people who aren't earning fair wages.

Your collections will never be conscious no matter what percentage of your clothes are made from recycled or "sustainably sourced" (whatever that means...) materials at these insane production levels.

Your very business model is reliant on a model of growth and excessive production that is incompatible with planetary limits.

Not to mention, the success of fast fashion is reliant on disposability. Fast fashion can only succeed by shoppers consistently buying, wearing (maybe), and discarding their clothes.

But industrialization and mass production has also resulted in a disconnect between designer and maker.
.
For truly ethical production, there must be an equal knowledge exchange between makers & designers in the design process, especially when artisans are using traditional techniques & generations-old crafts.
.
But what does collaborative design look like in practice? And how does this type of collaboration support more sustainable and ethical production?
.
I’m interviewed Tatiana of @zuahaza to discuss these questions and much more! Tune in and let us know your thoughts. 💗
