17 Brands With Ethical and Sustainable Dresses for Any Occasion

March 4, 2020
Share

Living in the Chicago area, I daydream about finally getting to break out any clothing that isn’t a sweater for about 6 months of the year — so when it’s finally that first day of spring that I can break out my sustainable dresses, I’m a happy camper.

It isn’t that day quite yet here, but that hasn’t kept me from already researching some go-to conscious brands with stunning eco and ethical dresses.

Using materials like organic cotton and Tencel and manufacturing locally or using fair trade practices, the sustainable dress brands in this guide will fit the bill for nearly any upcoming occasion. If you’re looking for exclusively formal dresses, check out my guide to ethical formal dresses here.

Note that this guide includes partners and affiliates. As always, I only include brands I truly love and meet high standards for ethics, sustainability, and aesthetics. Thanks for your support! [Cover image is from Valani]

Price Range Key: $ = Under $75 | $$ = $75 – $150 | $$$ = $150+

1. Valani

With flowy fits in feminine cuts, Valani’s dreamy dresses check off all of the boxes for an eco-minded fashion lover. The conscious fashion label uses only sustainably-sourced natural fabrics and non-toxic, low-impact dyes for their swoon-worthy frocks. Valani’s vegan dresses are made from banana fabric — a fiber created from banana stems discarded by the agricultural banana industry — or a hemp/Tencel blend. Both fabrics are breathable, biodegradable, and of course, beautiful!

Conscious Qualities: Eco-Friendly, Vegan, BIPOC-Owned, Gives Back, Plants a Tree With Every Order

Size Range: 0 – 12

But industrialization and mass production has also resulted in a disconnect between designer and maker.
.
For truly ethical production, there must be an equal knowledge exchange between makers & designers in the design process, especially when artisans are using traditional techniques & generations-old crafts.

But what does collaborative design look like in practice? And how does this type of collaboration support more sustainable and ethical production?

I’m interviewed Tatiana of @zuahaza to discuss these questions and much more! Tune in and let us know your thoughts. 💗
